How to Backup & Restore using Custom Recovery

This post will guide users how to create & restore from their backup using custom recovery (CWM,TWRP,Philz). This guide is highly recommended once you root as bootloop might occur to your unit once you modify the ROM or flash tweaks.

 

Requirements


 

How to Backup


  1. Reboot to custom recovery using the following methods:
    • [Rashr method] Open the app, select Reboot Recovery then select Yes.
    • [Manual method]  Shutdown your phone. After your phone is turned off, press & hold power and volume up button until Flare logo appears then release the buttons.
  2. Follow steps:
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate the menus, power buttonto select the item
    • [TWRP] Use touchscreen to navigate the menus
  3. To backup your current ROM:
    • [TWRP] Backup > Change storage to Micro SDcard(or phone if you have no Micro SDcard) > Select All Partitions > Check Enable compression (for smaller backup size) and Skip MD5 generation (just takes too much time) > Swipe slider to create backup
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate, power button to select
      • Backup/Restore > Select:
        • Backup to /sdcard (internal storage)
        • Backup to /storage/sdcard1 (external storage)
      • Go Back
  4. After successful backup, follow steps:
    • [CWM] Reboot Phone > Yes > Yes – Fix root (/system/xbin/su
    • [TWRP] Reboot > Reboot System
    • [Philz] Reboot Phone
  5. Congratulations! You have successfully created a backup of your current ROM.

 

How to Restore


  1. Reboot to custom recovery using the following methods:
    • [Rashr method] Open the app, select Reboot Recovery then select Yes.
    • [Manual method]  Shutdown your phone. After your phone is turned off, press & hold power and volume up button until Flare logo appears then release the buttons.
  2. Follow steps:
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate the menus, power buttonto select the item
    • [TWRP] Use touchscreen to navigate the menus
  3. To restore your backup:
    • [TWRP] Restore > Change the storage where you created your backup > Select the backup file > Check all partitions > Swipe slider to restore your backup
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate, power button to select
      • Backup/Restore > Select:
        • Restore from /sdcard (internal storage)
        • Restore from /storage/sdcard1 (external storage)
      • Select the backup file (the date & time is your hint)
      • Yes – restore
      • Go Back
  4. After successful backup, follow steps:
    • [CWM] Reboot Phone > Yes > Yes – Fix root (/system/xbin/su
    • [TWRP] Reboot > Reboot System
    • [Philz] Reboot Phone
  5. Congratulations! You have successfully restored from a backup of your ROM.

 

Deleting your Backup


Backup is located in External SDcard

  1. Open file manager
  2. Navigate to external sdcard or sdcard1
  3. Then follow these locations:
    • [CWM/Philz backups] clockworkmod > backups > backup_name (delete this folder)
    • [TWRP backups] TWRP > BACKUPS > Device_name >  backup_name  (delete this folder)
  4. Congratulations! You have successfully delete backup/s of your current ROM.
  5. Don’t forget to always create another backup of your current ROM.

Backup is located in Internal Storage

  1. Reboot to custom recovery using the following methods:
    • [Rashr method] Open the app, select Reboot Recovery then select Yes.
    • [Manual method]  Shutdown your phone. After your phone is turned off, press & hold power and volume up button until Flare logo appears then release the buttons.
  2. Follow steps:
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate the menus, power buttonto select the item
    • [TWRP] Use touchscreen to navigate the menus
  3. To delete backup/s:
    • [TWRP] Restore > Change the storage where you created your backup > Select the backup file > Select the Delete button on the upper right > Swipe to delete > Go back
    • [CWM/Philz] Use volume buttons to navigate, power button to select
      • Backup/Restore > Select:
        • Delete Old Backups from /sdcard (internal storage)
        • Delete Old Backups from /storage/sdcard1 (external storage)
      • Select the backup file (the date & time is your hint)
      • Yes – Delete
      • Go Back
  4. After successful deletion, follow steps:
    • [CWM] Reboot Phone > Yes > Yes – Fix root (/system/xbin/su
    • [TWRP] Reboot > Reboot System
    • [Philz] Reboot Phone
  5. Congratulations! You have successfully delete backup/s of your current ROM.
  6. Don’t forget to always create another backup of your current ROM.
